The discovery
Captain James Cook was born in a small village near Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He became in charge of the ship "Endeavour" in 1768, the vessel that he discovered Australia with. It was the time when Venus was due to pass in front of the sun, a very rare event that can be used to estimate the distance between the sun and the earth, when the Royal society decided to send astronomers to the Pacific to record the transit of the planet.This journey however lead to the discovery of Australia, as they landed in Torres strait, the east coast of Australia, in 1769. His next voyage was to hit the Atlantic ocean when he landed in Hawaii and was killed among his other crew men by the Hawaiians. The above picture shows the exact sample of Captain Cook's vessel. It is in Sydney and people are allowed to get on board. The picture on the right is taken from the bbc website.
