The most Thrilling thing I've ever done in my life!!!

SLINGSHOT is the name, guys! sure we all have exciting memories of the slingshots we played with in childhood, but this one is different for sure.
you will be thrown into the skies, tolerating 6 Gs, reaching 160 Km/h in less than 2 seconds and when you reach the top you'll be more than 80 meters above the ground!!!! and then bouncing in the sky like a yoyo!!! the worst part is that, there are no tracks or rails what so ever, you are just hanging from a couple of cables all the time! that is all.

Bali

Bali is one of Australian's tourist destination. It is in Indonesia and is famous for it's always sunny and moderate temperature, tropical greenery and water sports. There is no need to purchase a visa for Bali, even for Iranians. We weren't there for long but enought to experience some of the water sports; jet ski, snorkling, paragliding, rafting,... but unfortunately didn't take many picutres. may be next time.

These pictures are from 3 months ago, when we went to malaysia, but for some reason we had forgot to upload them on the blog. the first two are obviously the twin towers, the next one is a place called "genting highlands" where you go 20 minutes up this beautiful green hill via the cabins that you can see in the picture and then become amused by finding a gigantic complex, consisting of a big hotel, lots of shops, games, casino and even a theme part with roller coasters and free falls up there. the next three pictures are from the Batu caves, where people climb these 300 stairs and reach the cave up there and worship a god in the form of a statue; and the last picture is a wild monkey, something very common in malaysia and east Asia, living freely among humans.

world cup is over for IRAN

World cup is unfortunately over for Iran. Accepting this fact is really hard when you're in Iran but for us out here, although still kind of upseting but the fun of watching the games with other iranian and mexican friends was somewhat distracting from the losses. I do really hope that at least Mexico and Australia score!
BUT no doubt that we are still and always proud of IRAN!

this photo is taken in the children's part of the adelaide zoo. A young man wanted to take a picture from his child; asked him to hold a chicken in his hands and smile! i used the opportunity and took a picture too!
you can see the fake smile on his face and the fear in his eyes! it's really one of the best pictures i've taken! (and i've done nothing to it; no crops or any other alterations!)

Happy new year everybody. 21 th of march was the first day of persian's new year, 1385. It was the first year that Tajalli and I had celebrated the new year on our own. It felt lonely but still had that special feeling of joy and excitement. Our mexican friends came the next day for "sabzy polo ba mahi" and loved it. There is also an iranian gathering, to celebrate the new year, tomorrow but we probably won't go because it's just the night before Tajal's exam. Wish him luck! Christine, our supporter at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was worried for us beign away from our family on the new year that had basically informed everybody about it and to my surprise I got a lot of congradulations that day. Linsey is also planning to buy us a gold fish next year because I told her how I couldn't find a gold fish here and that it was a big part of our haftsin.
I wish everyone a healthy and a happy year filled with good news and take the opportunity to say that we love you all and miss you lots. Take care.

Zitlali and Jorje

It was my birthday today and Emanuel and Fabiola invited us over to their house for movies and sleep over. They really surprised me with the balloons and their mexican cake. They even searched and found out what persians say for "happy birthday" and wrote it out and hung it to wall as well. Emanuel's birthday was on the 1'st of march so we somehow celebrated his as well. It was the first time we met Zitlali and Jorje and we loved them. They have been here for 2 weeks so far and were Emanuel and Fabiola's friends back in Mexico.
We had a lot of fun and hopefully we'll even have more next year when the rest of you are here and hopefully our parents as well.

The Lake

The "west lake" is located just five minutes from our house. It was a man made thing started in 1970 and completed in 1977. About ten thousand tonnes of earth was excavated and it is about 11 km with an average depth of 5 meters. 3,100 million litres of water were transfered in it.
It is a great place for walking, bike riding, fishing, swimming, sailing and just relaxing.

Adelaide Fringe

The Adelaide Fringe is the largest art festival in Australia and second only to Edinburgh on the world stage. It has been held in Adelaide since 1960 and it's been going on once every 2 years ever since. It is a 24 day and night event including music, theatre, dance, circus, poetry, comedy, ... and about 783000 tourists come from all over the world to join.

Summer is almost over

summer is almost over and you can find good summer clothing sales in stores. We only had 5 or 6 days of hot days with a temperature of over 40 this year and the rest were pretty much between 25 to 33. We shouldn't be expecting a very cold autumn and winter either. Adelaide's best beaches are Glenelg, Henley, Brighton, West lakes, West beach, Samaphore and ... Although people are highly suggested to wear hats or long sleeved shirts but that is the only thing you very rarely see here is Adelaide. A typical Aussie is with shorts, top and thongs (slippers).
We didn't have a lot of time to go to the beach this year but maybe next year with the company of our beloveds we will be hanging around the beach more often, because it definitely IS fun.

I dedicate this picture to dear JACKIE, shabnam and farrokh's dog and HANNA, our previous beloved dog. Dogs and overall "animals" are very lucky here. They have special food, special toys and even special parks and are very much respected by humans. There are all sorts of crazy rules to protect animal's rights here. At least the good thing in Iran (for people who were scared of animals like myself) was that "they" were scared of humans and tried to keep away but you can hardly scare away an animal here. SPOOKY!!!

Hallet Cove (adelaide)

Hallet Cove is one of the suburbs located in the south west of Adelaide. As you can see it is up on the hills and has a nice view to the sea. It is very peaceful and calm and the sort of place that you'll never get tired of. There are beautiful houses there and since it is a bit far from the city center, about 20 minutes drive they are pretty cheap. Emanuel and Fabiola are hoping to live there sometime, Tajal and I are hoping to do the same but of course with the rest of our family members of course, our parents, sister and brothers, and friends as well.

Iran vs Mexico

As you all know, Iran is playing his opening match in world cup - group D against Mexico. The kick off will be at 6:30 am (Adelaide time!) in 12 June 2006. It's exciting as hell!! but what makes it even more exciting is that; we are going to watch the game with our Mexican friends! It's gonna be fun! but you know what? they've brought with themselves a big Mexican Flag, an original Jersey and a cap just to cheer their national team during the world cup tournament! In addition to that, even one of the iranians in adelaide (which i don't want to mention her name but you can see her holding the mexican flag and wearing a mexican hat in the above photo!!!!) has joined their side too! so, everybody who's coming to adelaide before world cup (bahman & nazanin) please bring a BIG (bigger than the one in photo) Flag, jerseies caps and anything you can with yourselves. it's going to be a night to remember!

by the way, I want to start a poll right now: how do you predict the result? can iran beat mexico?

26th of January 1788, the first fleet of british colonies arrived at the shores of Australia, in a place where later was called Sydney. Aussies celebrate this day every year as the Australia's National Day or Australia Day, and of course they celebrate it in their own way; going out, having BBQs, partying all night and going to concerts. It is also in this day, when new Australian citizens recieve their citizenship certificates and become Australian citizens officially!

But not all australians are happy in this day; some Aboriginals burn the australian flag in this day and call it the "Invasion Day"!

I want to dedicate this post to two people who have become our best friends here in Australia. They are so nice, supportive and lovely that we already feel like we've known them for ages. It is nice to know that we have so much in common, they are overseas doctors like us who have come from Mexico, they have the exact same car as we do (only a different color), they have come to Australia for the same reasons that we have and even our fathers look the same. Isn't that wierd! Emanuel is also a US citizen but has come to Australia because he didn't like living in the US. We just can't thank them enough for the support that they have provided us here and the love that they have shared with us. We love you guys!

Bicentennial Conservatory

The bicentennial conservatory is actually a rainforest museum. With help of 12 sensors, a thousand nozzles, a weather station and computers inside the building, they try to simulate a tropical climate by creating clouds, rains and winds! In addition to tropical plants, you can even see a few tropical birds inside too! for additional information about this huge landmark of Adelaide city, which is a part of the Botanic Gardens and the biggest bicentennial conservatory in the southern hemisphere follow this link.

Adelaide churches

Adelaide is called the city of churches, but not because there are almost 500 churches in the city, but because most of them are historical monuments dating back to 100 years ago. and almost all of them are in good conditions and still working. the pictures above are taken from outside of St. Francis Xavier and St. Peter's Cathedral. for more info see Adelaide churches and cathedrals. just to let you know, there are only 2 mosques and 2 synagouges in adelaide!

The only Capital city named after a woman

Born Adelheid Luise Therese Caroline Amalie, in 1792 to George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen in Germany, she married William and became the queen of England when William was crowned as The King William IV in 1830. As king William died in 1837, he had no male children from queen Adelaide to succeed the throne. Queen Adelaide passed away in december 2nd 1849.

The capital of South Australia was named after the queen's name in 1836, the suggestion was made by captain Hindmarsh, the first south australian governor, which was accepted by King William VI. Adelaide comes from Adelheid which is a german word and means "noble woman".

The discovery

Captain James Cook was born in a small village near Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He became in charge of the ship "Endeavour" in 1768, the vessel that he discovered Australia with. It was the time when Venus was due to pass in front of the sun, a very rare event that can be used to estimate the distance between the sun and the earth, when the Royal society decided to send astronomers to the Pacific to record the transit of the planet.This journey however lead to the discovery of Australia, as they landed in Torres strait, the east coast of Australia, in 1769. His next voyage was to hit the Atlantic ocean when he landed in Hawaii and was killed among his other crew men by the Hawaiians.

Adelaide has a china town too but I believe it's real china towns are "The universities". When you visit adeliade's universities you almost forget that you are in Australia!

How Aussies keep flies away

Australia is very famous for its flies. They never let go! There are a lot of flies here in australia, they don't cause any harm but they drive you CRAZY because once they find you they won't easily leave you. That's probably how this hat had been invented. The inventor had probably become so annoyed by the flies that he'd started thinking of ways to get rid of them and BINGO! He created this hat which actually works. As you can see it has some objects hung on strings that easily move and keep the flies away. What a brain!!!

City is invaded by Santas!

As we get closer and closer to christmas we see more christmas spirit around. as you can see in the picture, there is a bus driver dressed up as santa, boosting up everybody as they get on the bus. I also must note that being in santa's clothes is a very hard job to do here in this time of year, because as you now we have to celebrate christmas in the middle of summer. so we wish you all a very happy and warm christmas; MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Botanic Gardens

This piece of heaven is located inside the city center in 125 acres. It was opened to public in 1857 and more than 1.3 million people visit this garden each year. inside the garden there are a lot of glasshouses and museums about agriculture and containing non-indigenous plants. It's very hard to visit the whole park in a single day and every corner of it is completely different from another. i took a lot of photos from the park, which will be posted on this page in the few coming days. for more information about the Botanic Gardens please follow this link.

Lucky Koala

The Koala is a marsupial. It means that its young is born immature, usually blind and deaf and without any furs and it then develops in a pouch during a 6-7 month time period. A mature Koala usually eats about 1 kilogram of leaves and sleeps 18-20 hours a day! Australians love their wildlife and care alot for their animals. It might be kind of funny to know that there are a couple of koalas at the zoo which switch shifts so that no one gets tired. You even have to be careful not to wake the animal up when you are taking a photo with your flash camera. There are about 100,000 koalas in Australia nowadays and they have been dereasing in number over the years. The AKF, Australian Koala Foundation, with 20 years of experience has a strong track record in strategic koala research, conservation and community education.

ice cream balls

It seems to be something new here because a lot of people like us had no idea what had been inside these balls until they had startd chewing them and probably thinking "ouch they're cold!".

Grand Lodge of Freemasons in SA

As you all know, Freemasons have a mysterious but effective history in our home country; Iran. back there freemasonry was known as an illegal or secret activity involving mostly politicians and scientists. It always reminds me of Faramooshkhaneh and all the secrets and mysterious stories about it. This picture is the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Adelaide, located just infront of the main building of Adelaide University. As you see, this is a legal community and nothing is undercover! As anyone could expect, their buildings are architecturally beautiful, specially the one in Sydney. They even have free tours every week to show you inside the building and it seems to be easy to apply for membership and become a MASON!!

The Adelaide Bus System

Adelaide has a highly specialized public transport system. There are bus routes throughout the entire city and they come quite on time. There are some free busses around the city center and other crowded areas to encourage people to use the public transport rather than to bring their car and create more traffic. The bus tickets were very amazing to me at first. When you get on the bus, you put your ticket through a machine and get a number printed on it which is suggestive of the ticket's expiracy time for that day and is usually 2 hours after the time you had first inserted the ticket through the machine. That means you can get on and off all the busses you want throughout that 2 hour time for free. We once had to change 5 buses and since we managed to do that within 2 hours only one bus ticket was needed for all of that. Well you might feel like this is not a big deal, but once you get to know that the tickets are $2.50 per person then it becomes a big deal.

Soccer, as Aussies call it "it is football but not as you know it", is not a popular sport here and dosen't have many fans. Most of the football fields here are either empty or people are doing things other than football in it! Despite the socceroos recent bad performances, it's still nice to know that unlike the media in our country, everyone here is supportive and keeps up the good spirit! so NO WORRIES ( a term you hear a million times everyday) !

The world's second largest O-bahn!

We were calmfully sitting on this bus when it suddenly headed into these tracks that looked like train tracks with a speed of more than 80 k/h. We were just crossing our fingers that the driver knows what he is doing and that he can keep between the rails, but to our surprise he wasn't even holding on to the steer! he was only pushing the gas pedal! Well I guess now you know what an O-baun is. when buses get into these tracks some elements that are connected to the front wheels fix the bus between the rails and that's how it keeps in place. Germany has the world's largest O-bahn and the second largest is in Adelaide Australia! Hurray!!!

Police on bike

Don't be surprised if you see a police chasing the suspect via bicycle or even a horse!! You actually don't see alot of police around in the city. Adelaide is a very peaceful city and during the 2 months that we've been here not even a single crime has been reported on the news.

The Main Idea

The idea of this photoblog was stollen from my beloved, innovative cousin Mohammad who has recently moved to Canada and created his blog (canpics) to share his everyday experience with the ones he loves. We see so many beautiful things everyday and keep thinking wish "they" were here to enjoy things with us. So this way we might feel like we're able to share our moments with our beloved ones; hoping one day it can be accomplished fully by their presence.
The pictures, although taken with a professional camera (thanx to Farrokh) are not professional like Farrokh's pictures. They are only a glimpse of our everyday life, wanting to be shared with you.
